Directed Energy Weapon Systems Market Strategic Assessment and Forecast Till 2030

Directed Energy Weapon Systems

Directed energy weapons (DEWs) is largely defined as those weapons which produce high power beam of concentrated energy in the form of electromagnetic, atomic, and sub-atomic particles, which is used to damage or destroy objects or eliminate human adversaries. Directed energy weapon systems are primarily classified into three technologies: high-power laser, high-power microwave and neutral particle beam. Moreover, neutral particle beam technology is currently in the theoretical stage and adequate research is needed for further development of the prototype.

Directed energy weapon systems can integrate with different platforms including ship-based platforms (aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, frigates, littoral combat ships), airborne platforms (combat aircrafts, unmanned aerial vehicles and helicopters) and ground-based platforms (main battle tank, infantry fighting vehicle, armored vehicle, mobile and fixed stations). Based on the types of role, directed energy weapon systems are integrating on these platforms. Many directed energy weapon systems can be integrated in multiple platforms as well.

The ground-based platform segment currently leads the market and is estimated to continue to lead during the forecast period, as defense forces of leading countries seek to deploy directed energy weapon systems in their ground defense systems such as main battle tank, infantry fighting vehicle, and multi-purpose armored vehicle to counter the adversaries from ground itself. For instance, in August 2019, the U.S. Army awarded a contract to Northrop Grumman Corporation for developing a prototype for 50 KW laser weapon system that will be integrated on Stryker vehicle family by 2022.

There have been significant developments in the field of directed energy weapon systems resulting in growing interest and escalating demand for deployment of these advanced weapons by military forces across the globe. Due to increasing military budget inflows across the globe due growing conflicts among various countries, the demand of cutting-edge technologies such as laser and microwave weapon are in substantial demand. The directed energy weapon systems are developed with the aim of countering the growing threats from unmanned aerial vehicles, mortars, missiles, and small boats at a low engagement cost. Key advantages of directed energy weapon systems are their high speed, precision, flexibility, and low operation cost.

The need for enhanced border security due to increasing land disputes, migration, and smuggling, has compelled several countries to further strengthen their security. This has led to the increase demand in the development of advanced directed energy weapon systems to provide enhanced situational awareness to the soldiers so as to have a competitive edge over the opponents. With recent developments in the field of optics, laser and microwave technology, directed energy weapon systems are becoming available at a reliable cost.

Along with the rising military programs, increase in the military spending is attributed to the growing interest in development and deployment activities of directed energy weapon systems. Increase in the military budgets gave a much-needed boost to the development programs of directed energy weapon systems and upgradation programs of different platforms for integration with these advanced weapons.
